The following excerpt was taken from the Midwifery Today web site (www.midwiferytoday.com) question and answer section. It was submitted by our co-member, Stephen Ranicki, DC, FICPA. It was in response to wearing a belt for relief of SPD pain.
“The pubic symphysis pain is most likely caused by pelvic subluxation. The pelvis is a ring, so if one of the joints misaligns and is fixated, the others will undergo more and unusual stresses. The production of the hormone relaxin during pregnancy loosens the normally taught ligaments of the sacroiliac joints, allowing them to subluxate more easily and more frequently.
Wearing a trochanter belt will restrict the motion into the PS which will, in turn, reduce the pain, but it does nothing to restore the motion to the joints of the pelvis that will be so important during the delivery process. Nor does it allow for proper alignment of the pelvis to maximize the size and shape of the birth canal.
Even more important, leaving the subluxation uncorrected means that the interference with the mother’s nervous system remains, possibly affecting the development and growth of her baby. This situation is easily corrected by visiting a chiropractor.
The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association’s web site, http://www.icpa4kids.org, can direct you to a chiropractor in your area who has the proper certification.”
Just a few moments of our time to respond to simple discussions like this can bring the awareness of chiropractic care in pregnancy to many people who would not otherwise know about its benefits.
