Family Health Updates and Resources

Autism is Preventable and Reversible

From Age of Autism e-newsletter comes this web-based premiere, "Autism Yesterday" from J.B. Handley co-founder of Generation Rescue and a contributor to Age of Autism. This is an amazing show-give yourself the time to watch it.

This recent article from Science Daily announces a new theory that autism symptoms may be reversible: www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/04/090401145312.htm

The Link Between Autism and Low Levels of Vitamin D

According to several respected leaders in child and adult nutrition from across the United States, the current meteoric rise in autism and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) may well be a direct consequence of significant vitamin D deficiencies in pregnant women and their infants. 1-6 And evidence points to vitamin D deficiency as the cause of other debilitating brain conditions as well. 5, 7-10 This insidious deficiency is readily remedied—yet tragically often missed.

Chiropractic Care May Help ADHD Symptoms

The research, reported in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health – Chiropractic, includes a review of the literature supporting the role of chiropractic in children suffering from a number of disorders that share their origin with ADHD.

“Research is revealing that there is a relationship between abnormalities in the spine, the nervous system and brain” stated Dr. Pamela Stone-McCoy, lead author of the paper. “Basic science research shows that the proper development of the brain relies on proper structure and movement of the spine from an early age.”

Home Births as Safe as Hospital Births

The largest study of its kind has found that for low-risk women, giving birth at home is as safe as doing so in hospital with a midwife. The Department of Health said that giving more mothers-to-be the opportunity to choose to give birth at home was one of its priority targets for 2009-10.

Premature Births Cause Developmental Problems

Prematurity is up in the US and it may be affecting children's developmental progress. "Babies born just a few weeks early face higher odds of developmental delays and behavior problems that show up in kindergarten, a study of nearly 160,000 children found."

The article points out that the rapid increase in scheduled c-sections are contributing to the rise in prematurity and perhaps this practice in obstetrics should be reevaluated.

What the study did not include was an interesting point-- pre-natal ultrasound has been shown to cause a rise in prematurity. We have known this since 1979 when this study was published in radiology: Diagnostic ultrasound: effects on the DNA and growth patterns of animal cells and yet current news releases showing concern about the rise prematurity fail to address this issue.

Assisted Reproductive Technology Linked to Birth Defects

Compared to naturally conceived infants, those babies conceived with assisted reproductive technology (ART) are two to four times more likely to have certain types of heart defects, cleft lip and gastrointestinal defects.

Some OTC Drugs to Avoid in Pregnancy

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) [uses a] rating system to categorize the potential risk to the fetus for a given drug.

Category D [are those for which] adequate, well-controlled or observational studies in pregnant women have demonstrated a risk to the fetus. (However, the benefits of therapy may outweigh the potential risk. For example, the drug may be acceptable if needed in a life-threatening situation or serious disease for which safer drugs cannot be used or are ineffective.)

Ibuprofen—Some common brands are Advil and Motrin. This drug is considered category B (drugs that do not appear to cause birth defects or other problems) until the third trimester, then it is category D. It has a borderline association with gastroschisis (a congenital defect characterized by an incomplete closure of the abdominal wall with protrusion of the viscera). All NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) used near term may cause premature closure of the ductus arteriosus and inhibit labor. Oligohydramnios after prolonged use is a common complication with NSAIDs as a class. No adequate studies have been done on ibuprofen in pregnant women. Therefore, ibuprofen is not recommended during pregnancy.

Tums (calcium carbonate) is category D in pregnancy. Extended heavy use of calcium antacids (20 grams or more daily for a prolonged time) may cause excess calcium in the blood, which can lead to kidney stones and reduced kidney function. People who already have impaired kidneys may develop milk-alkali syndrome (causing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and mental confusion) with as little as four grams a day. (The amounts listed are incredibly high intake amounts and far exceed the normal dosage recommendations.)

Know what you are taking! Ask your midwife or look up the drug yourself. Some good online resources are:

Cancer Causing Toxins in Fluoride

New York - April 12, 2009 - Traces of arsenic, copper, lead and other impurities are found in chemicals used to fluoridate public water supplies, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). (1)

Controversial fluoridation schemes are promoted by special-interest groups such as the American Dental Association (ADA) which claims adding fluoride chemicals to public water supplies reduces tooth
decay. "Most public and government officials take their lead from the ADA," says attorney Paul Beeber, President, New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation, Inc.

Dental Mercury Banned

Two European countries have now banned mercury amalgam fillings, and America's health regulator recently issued new advice about how they may harm pregnant women and developing children, so why do British officials seem unconcerned? Morland Sanders asks whether a mouth full of metal could be affecting your health.
