Among the causes of ADHD are brain injuries due to birth trauma or pre-birth problems. During birth, the brain structures believed to be linked to the development of ADHD are vulnerable to hypoxic damage. The damage is caused by inadequate amounts of oxygen reaching parts of the brain while blood flow is reduced. Considering the marked increase in birth interventions and their resulting trauma on the infant, the medicalization of birth may be a significant contributor to the rise in ADHD-like symptoms.
