Vitamin D Halves Risk of Preterm Delivery

Pregnant women receiving 4,000 international units (IU) of vitamin D decreased the risk of premature birth by half. It is not clear how vitamin D lowers the risk, but it appears to increase the amount of blood flowing to the placenta, which by bringing more oxygen and nutrients to the fetus, promotes healthier growth.
