Existing FDA regulation dictates that anything that provides health benefits is a drug, and prevents companies and growers from marketing and making health claims of their product, even if it is an everyday food like walnuts, cherries, etc., without completing its expensive new drug application process. However, a bill called the Free Speech About Science Act, or HR 4913, submitted by the Alliance for Natural Health would allow those who sell or market natural health products to reference and cite scientific research that highlights the product’s health benefits.
