Diethylstilbestrol (DES) was once prescribed to prevent miscarriages or premature delivery. A study that included 3373 women exposed to DES, a synthetic form of estrogen, and 1036 unexposed controls revealed that DESexposed daughters are more likely to experience delays in conceiving (32% of the women in the study) and are less likely to ever conceive. Those who do conceive have a 30% risk of first-trimester miscarriage and face three to four times the odds of having a preterm birth, second-trimester miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy.
