Editors of a specialty obstetrics journal on ultra-sound are concerned by the “serious lack of experimental data on the effects on the fetus of colour and pulsed Doppler ultrasound … in the first trimester.” But they face an ethical dilemma on whether such studies should even be published as the study could be inherently risky to the participants, and of no therapeutic value. Two studies were submitted to the journal, and they have debated the ethical question of publishing them.
