A recent Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality report has named depression and mental disorders as the pediatric conditions most expensive to treat. In 2006 alone, 4.6 million children were treated for mental disorders, at a cost of $8.9 billion— averaging about $1,935 per child. As scientific evidence mounts contradicting the use of psychiatric medications for children, ADHD drugs are under increased scrutiny. Many parents and practitioners are voicing concern that children taking the drugs are at risk, since there is evidence that continued use of ADHD drugs is dangerous to long-term physical and mental growth.
