Parents-to-be have many things to consider about diet and health over the course of a pregnancy, but science has shown a strong link between early fetal development and maternal lifestyle during the very first days after conception. Essentially, a mother’s lifestyle (her food and exercise habits) plays a vital role in the activation of genes during the first few weeks of fetal development. Babies that developed in a high-fat diet environment in the early weeks of pregnancy were found to have higher likelihood of obesity, insulin-resistance and cardiovascular disease. The key is to maintain adequate dietary and lifestyle control for about three months prior to conception.
