Tens of thousands of patients are killed each year by Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA); 19,000 per year in the United States alone. In the last twenty-five years, Norway has public healthcare system found a way to become the most infection-free country in the world, and their model is surprisingly straightforward and can be replicated: prescribe antibiotics only when absolutely necessary so people do not develop a resistance to them, screen and isolate patients with MRSA; track and follow up on each case of MRSA.
